Communities across the United States are preparing to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026, and Clinton, Iowa is already gearing up with a full slate of events and community initiatives leading up to its annual Fourth of July celebration.
Planning for the festivities began early this year, with the Clinton Fourth of July Committee launching biweekly meetings in January to organize one of the region’s largest Independence Day celebrations.
Beyond the traditional festivities, the committee and community partners are encouraging organizations across Clinton County to create unique programs and experiences commemorating 250 years of American history.
250-Mile Ride Launches National Challenge
Leading the charge is the Riverbend Bicycle Club, which is organizing a special 250-mile cycling challenge to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.
The event invites cyclists from anywhere in the world to participate during the week of June 27 through July 4. Riders will join teams and collectively log miles, with the goal of each team riding at least 250 miles during the weeklong celebration.
Participation has already spread beyond the Clinton region.
“We already have riders participating from places as far away as Qatar and Iowa City,” said organizers. “We want to add as many teams as possible and as many cyclists as possible. How cool would it be to have 250 teams to commemorate the 250 years.”
Participants will submit their mileage totals to their team captain. Currently, there are planned prizes (think a commemorative display item for bragging rights) for both local and national teams:
- Team with the most total miles
- Team with the highest average miles per rider
Currently, 12 team captains have signed up, and additional captains are welcome. Riders can either create a team, join an existing team, or be randomly assigned to one. Please reach out to Matt Parbs at mparbs@growclinton.com to register. He will add you to a team or provide the team link to be a team captain.
Local Parade Participation Encouraged
The end ride of the challenge will be for all cyclists to join their community’s Fourth of July parade. All community groups in the Clinton area are invited to participate in the Fourth of July Parade.
Community Ideas Wanted for America 250
The Fourth of July Committee and Grow Clinton are also seeking additional ideas from residents, organizations, and businesses for events and commemorations tied to the America 250 celebration. One of the first opportunities for residents to participate is the annual Fourth of July button design contest, which is now open. Organizers are inviting elementary aged students to submit creative designs that capture the spirit of Clinton and the nation’s 250th anniversary. Details and submission deadlines found at https://www.facebook.com/FourthofJulyClintonIA.
Ideas may include:
- Special events
- Historical programs
- Community activities
- Creative commemorations of local history
Suggestions will be added to a master list of Clinton County’s America 250 activities and shared with state and national celebration networks.
