Henry O. Langrehr of Clinton, Iowa—born November 4, 1924, and passed away April 23, 2025—will be recognized as a Hometown Hero during a special ceremony on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. The event will take place at the Clinton County Freedom Rock, located along the Mississippi Riverfront next to the Showboat Theatre in Clinton.
A local and national hero, Henry served with distinction in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. He was deeply proud of his family, unwaveringly patriotic, and wholly committed to defending our nation’s freedoms.
In his honor, an image of Henry rendering a salute to his fellow servicemen and women has been painted on the westfacing side of the Clinton County Freedom Rock. This tribute is part of a statewide initiative by artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, who created hand-painted Freedom Rocks in each of Iowa’s 99 counties to recognize local veterans.
Henry’s bravery was most evident on June 6, 1944, D-Day, when, at just 19 years old, he parachuted into Sainte-MèreÉglise, France. After being captured and imprisoned in a Nazi war camp, he orchestrated a daring escape. His harrowing experiences are detailed in the book Whatever It Took, which he co-authored with Jim DeFelice, best known for American Sniper.
A video available on YouTube captures Henry recounting the moment he jumped into France, crashed through a greenhouse roof, engaged enemy forces, and helped secure vital bridges and the surrounding area. His story continues to inspire and exemplify the meaning of true heroism in combat.
The June 20th ceremony will include:
• Kay Schneider, Henry’s daughter and Clinton resident, along with other family and friends in attendance • The Star-Spangled Banner, performed by Bharati Manion
• Remarks from Clinton Mayor Scott Maddasion and Amvets Post #28 Commander Jim Manion
• A 21-gun salute by ten members of Amvets Post #28 Honor Guard
• Ceremonial presentation of the American flag, folded in the traditional triangular shape to honor Henry’s service
• Closing performance of God Bless America by Bharati Manion
All are welcome to attend. No registration is necessary. Seating will be available to those requiring a chair.
This event is made possible through the collaborative efforts of Grow Clinton, Amvets Post #28 (Clinton), American Legion June Van Meter Post 190 (Clinton), the City of Clinton, and dedicated community volunteers.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Langrehr family for allowing us to honor Henry and celebrate the extraordinary life of a true Hometown Hero. His story—and his legacy—will live on through those he inspired and protected.
